A spectacle maker's view
Alain Mikli
Glasses seen up close
Alain Mikli is one of France’s most inventive eyewear designers. Stylish and passionate about his work, he brings soul into the glasses he designs. They are made with cellulose acetate, a unique material composed of 75% cotton, also known as «natural plastic» : a raw material sometimes difficult to tame. The challenge is to circumvent the difficulties so as to transform the natural plastic into an authentic object of pleasure. Acetate, which ages naturally, can be processed ad infinitum.
The material is initially cut into rectangular acetate sheets, of which only 30% is used in the glasses’ manufacturing process. Through friction, little bits of acetate are then added onto the sheets for thickness and volume.
A great vision of well being : Alain Mikli tailors his glasses according to a specific patent in order to have them stimulate certain acupuncture points. Everything is made to ensure the glasses are self adjustable : the result of precise and manual assembling. Quite unique.
