Andres Serrano
Andres Serrano is an american artist who lives in New York; from very early on he greatly admired the art of the Renaissance and religious iconography. Although attracted by painting and sculpture, he finally turned towards photography. In 2001, he undertook ‘America’, a series of portraits of contemporary America that was exhibited in many towns across Europe and the United States. He most often explores themes linked to social problems, sex or religion. Frequently accused of being provocative, his choice of artistic material is daring, using themes that tend towards the controversial, as in the series ‘The Morgue’ or ‘Shit’ that were shown in 2008 by the Yvon Lambert Gallery which represents him. He is also very keen on composition and his work captures a sense of aestheticism, giving an iconic quality to the subjects photographed. This prayer was inspired by Irina Movmyga Vitali’s bracelets.

Bracelets, particularly these bracelets by Irina Vitali Movmyga, remind me of chains. The chains of beauty, of fashion, of art and of religion. I see this image as both a prayer and a plea for a better world for all of us. Bracelets will never change, they will always be bonds of love and inspiration, the handcuffs around our wrists that tells us who we are and who we want to be.
