Jeanne Susplugas
Jeanne Susplugas is a French artist whose work is structured around the problems associated with addictions and their iconography. Ranging from video, photography and installations to drawing, her work reflects an ongoing hesitancy between seduction and feelings of anxiety. She creates accessible spaces, ‘houses’ that challenge the spectator about intimate and social behaviours. Her work has been exhibited at the Villa Medicis in Rome, the Palazzo delle Papesse in Siena, the Fresnoy National Studio, the Museum of Modern Art of St Etienne and the Museum of Grenoble; her films have been shown at festivals such as Hors Pistes (Pompidou Centre, Paris), Locarno International Festival and the Miami International Festival. Future exhibitions will take place at the Château de Jau, the Maison des Arts in Malakoff, the Bureau d’Art et de Recherche, as well as at the Musée de la Piscine in Roubaix. ‘Light house’ is a luminous minimalist structure that fluctuates between attraction and repulsion, appearing as the auxiliary of our bodies wherein reside all our conditions.
Earliest memories
… I imagine a kindly midwife putting a little identification bracelet on me. I have the impression that my first memories are linked to sounds. Distinctive little clinks that fluctuated between sensuality and irritation. One of the bracelets that I have had for a very long time is this metal chain of my grandfather’s, its dogtag engraved with the bare minimum: 383, Susplugas Jean, Perpignan, 1925.
First feelings
The bracelet represented the world of adults that one tried to imitate but to which one did not yet have access. Then quickly it became a sign of femininity and of belonging to a group. No matter what its origin – classic jewellery, imitation or handicraft – the bracelet provides punctuation in life and captures memories along the way.
Last wishes
The bracelet as a substitute for medicine! As a solution for everything! as a medical bracelet (anti-allergy, antinausea…), as GPS for those with Alzheimers, as a multimedia interface, indeed for surveillance of any kind!
