Pascal Colrat

Photographer, graphic artist and sign-writer: Pascal Colrat is three men in one.He chose very early in his career to concentrate on posters, where multipleimages reach a wide audience via diverse media. In May 2002, he exhibited amajor series of diptychs in the Centre Georges Pompidou, « Signs inBelorussia ». The theme reflected his work about the country, and hisdenunciation of the drama that followed the Chernobyl disaster in a stronglypost-communist climate. Other themes include slavery, India and the violenceof the Los Angeles gangs. He is now represented by the Talmart gallery.

Earliest memories
I remember my grandfather’s fobwatch.I used to love opening it and looking at the mechanism. That’s actually the best thing about that kind of watch.I found a blurred number on it.My grandfather worked in the mines, and on the roads in the south. One day he was hit right in the chestby a sharp fragment of rock which would have gonestraight into his heart if he hadn’t been wearing hiswatch under his waistcoat. So for me as a young child, this watch was always a wondrous object. It had saved a man’s life.

First feelings
I have something of an arms-length relationship with time.I stay in my own little bubble, and my studio is quite cut oΩ from the world.I’ve created a sort of permanent jet-lag by having severalclocks on the walls all set to different times.

Last wishes
One day,we’ll realise that the mobile phoneis just for making calls with.
